New Moms strengthens families by partnering with young moms as they progress toward housing stability, economic mobility, and family well-being. New Moms is a nonprofit organization with a $8 million budget and a staff of nearly 60. At New Moms, young moms, 24 and under, take powerful first steps toward economic mobility and family well-being. Our 2-Generation approach puts families experiencing poverty in control of their goals and unleashes their potential. New Moms’ headquarters is located on the west side of Chicago in the Austin neighborhood. Our social enterprise, Bright Endeavors, which provides paid transitional jobs for young moms, is located nearby in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. We also have an office in Oak Park serving the near western suburbs.

About the Job:
This part-time (20 hours/week) position is responsible for providing support and coaching to participants in obtaining their High School Equivalency exams and other tutoring support for college success. It is expected that 50% of time will support Workforce Development participants and 50% to Housing and Family Support participants. The Adult Education coach will champion all New Moms values including our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, in both strategic planning and performance. This position is located at our Oak Park office and spends significant time at our other locations in Austin and East Garfield Park. (Also see COVID-19 Modifications below).
Schedule: Two full workdays (8 hours, 8:30a-4:30p) and one half day (4 hours) are required. A full day on Monday is required to meet programmatic needs, and the other two days are negotiable upon hire.
Starting Hourly Rate: $21.50 - $22.50/hour DOQ
Key Job Responsibilities:
Workforce Development Department (50%)
- Teach Adult Education in-person one on one and in group settings that prepare students to pass their High School Equivalency exams (GED/HiSet) and transition to college and/or career
- Provide tutoring on self-study materials or certification preparation sources
- Administer pre and post assessment tests including TABE and/or CASAS
- Design and implement educational activities using a variety of teaching strategies to help students achieve their goals
- Provide a classroom environment that is equitable and inclusive as well as implementing instruction that considers a variety of learning styles, facilitates active learning, and offers strategies for successfully passing standardized exams
- Teach contextualized curricula in the manufacturing career sector that will bridge student success in group and one-on-one settings in our job training program
- Utilize online learning platforms and digital tools to enhance student engagement and learning
- Maintain strong relationships with students, contacting them as needed with the intent to promote persistence and retention
- Monitor student progress, report outcomes, and refer students for additional assessments and/or support services as needed/appropriate
Housing and Family Support Departments (50%)
- Works in tandem with other New Moms staff to integrate services across the Agency, collaborating with staff and other collateral sources on specific case-related issues
- Maintains working relations with other social service or public agencies; providing linkage of participants to appropriate resources and advocates for participants as necessary. Secures appropriate release and consent forms and facilities inter-agency referrals as needed
- Performs written and electronic recordkeeping functions as required for both internal and external databases on a timely basis
- Upholds the New Moms’ Executive Skills Coaching approach which is grounded in racial equity
- Regularly participates in agency and program staff meetings, as well as professional group seminars or conferences to enhance professional knowledge and job skills
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree required; in fields of Education, English, language arts, reading or related field preferred
- Experience teaching Adult Education and/or vocational courses preferred
- Working knowledge of Adult Education standards, pathways and assessments preferred
- Strong digital and technology skills including Microsoft software applications preferred
- Sound professional judgment and analytical ability
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and in writing
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, projects, and deadlines concurrently
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team approach model, taking individual responsibility and autonomy while also working well as part of a team
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours depending on needs of the program
- Valid driver’s license, with safe driving record and valid insurance
- Access to a car and/or ability to use public transportation required
- New Moms employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If you are not able to receive the vaccine for medical or religious reasons, you may seek approval for an exemption through the Director of HR.
- Work hours take place on site at our three (3) New Moms locations. However, candidates must have ability to work remotely as needed. A laptop and cell phone will be provided by New Moms.
